A Lois Lane & Clark Kent Essay
By Louise Lane
Well knowing in the world media for 75 years, Lois Lane and Clark Kent/Superman are two iconic characters that are in our lives since 1939 when Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created the characters and the love triangle with two people since by then Lois didn’t know Clark Kent was Superman.
Along the years, the beloved characters have been played by different actors from George Reeves and Noel Neil, passing to Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder, updating them to the 90’s with Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher’s faces until get two new reboots in the 2000’s with two different set of actors: Erica Durance and Tom Welling in the TV Show Smallville and Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth in the movie Superman Returns.
But I’m here to talk about the Smallville version. What’s the difference between them and their earlier versions including the comics and animated ones? For one, they are younger. They are in their earlier 20’s and still don’t know what they want or what they are doing. Yeah, they made some mistakes in the process but that’s part of their learning as characters. They have to make those mistakes to learn. Second, they don’t like each other very much. At least is what they want for people outside to believe. Lois teases Clark a lot, punches him and nicknamed him Smallville. Clark thinks Lois is rude, stubborn and can’t stand her. But as Lana says in the same scene, the best ones always start like that.
In the current season 8, they couldn’t have been closer of their earlier versions including the comics. They are both working together in the Daily Planet although they are still in the basement and aren’t well knowing yet. Lois & Clark are also falling for each other. Deep. Even so they are still in their denial land trying to ignore their own feelings to not have their hearts tearing apart anymore. Both of them already have their heartaches and they are trying to avoid that again,
But the chemistry and feelings them have for each other, speaks volumes. It’s there and they know that. And although this year, their friendship is taking a big and different step for something more romantic. Baby steps of course, but I have a feeling that this whole change of their relationship has something to do with the season finale. Why they would bring Doomsday in the same year they have built a new Clois romantic relationship? It has to be connected as they are re-creating the famous “Superman’s Death scene” from the comics, with him dying in Lois arms. A very touching scene. I cried when I read that comic.
The thing I like more about Lois and Clark’s relationship is their dynamic and funny scenes. Clark is always happy when he is around Lois. She made him smile. And that’s a very good thing for our superhero. Clark needs to be happy after all the drama he went trough in the last seasons. He deserves to be happy and Lois is the right person to do that. She knows how to ground him to the earth and still make him connected with the human race. She knows him better than anyone including his good heart.
In this season, we are having more episodes related to the Superman mythology exploring Clark’s new identity as the “Red Blue Blur” that are making mysterious savings in Metropolis, while Lois become the reporter we all know and starts her obsession with the new superhero as well. Like we see in “Stiletto”, we have the first glimpse of the Clark/Lois/RBB triangle and I hope this is just a teaser for what season 9 deserves for us, fans of the iconic couple.
