Episode 4.22 - Commencement

Written By: Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer
Directed by: Greg Beeman
Original Air Date: May 18, 2005

Clark (Tom Welling) begins to piece together the reason he was sent to Earth after he has a nightmare that something horrible is going to happen to Smallville and heads to the cave to seek answers from Jor-El. His biological father tells him he must reunite the three crystals immediately or a disaster of epic proportions will befall the planet and even Clark won’t be able to stop it. Meanwhile, Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) helps Lana (Kristin Kreuk) escape Smallville after the death of Genevieve Teague; then takes shocking action to get one of the crystals away from Lionel (John Glover). Realizing they are connected to Clark, Chloe (Allison Mack) tries to stop Lex from discovering the truth about the crystals. Jason (Jensen Ackles) takes Jonathan (John Schneider) and Martha (Annette O’Toole) hostage and threatens to kill Martha unless Jonathan tells him where Clark hid the crystals.

MUSIC GUIDE

No songs appeared in this episode, but the music of Mark Snow was showcased more than ever. From the emotional farewell scenes to the pulsing intensity held throughout, Mr. Snow’s music served as the perfect complement to the writers’ words, the director’s direction, and the cast’s terrific acting.

QUOTES

Lex: [to Lana, embracing her]
Now you have to trust me.

Lex: [to Lana, about the element stone] Don’t worry, it’s
still there. I’d never take it from you.

Clark: I can’t help but feel this is some kind of warning.

Lois: I had this one [nightmare] last week –- really scary.
This guy wearing a red cape. [wrinkles her nose]

Clark: [slightly sarcastic] Wow, that sounds horrible, Lois.

Lois: Yeah.

Lois: Mr. and Mrs. Kent, I just wanted to say thanks for
everything. You guys are like the mom and dad I always wanted to
have.

Jonathan: Lois, we want you to know that you are welcome back
here anytime.

Clark: Actually–

Martha: We’ll all miss you, Lois.

Lois: [smiles] I’ll miss you all too. [Shelby jumps up to be
near Lois; she pats him...] Him? Not so much.

Lionel: I thought I’d do Miss Lang a favor and tidy up the
place a bit. She left it quite a mess. Quite a mess.

Lex: Trust me, Lana Lang has nothing to do with this.

Lionel: Oh, so chivalrous of you. You were the gallant hero
trying to protect the damsel in distress.

Lex: I’m warning you – leave her alone.

Lionel: But all your life, you’ve had a tendency to let the
damsel lead you straight into the mouth of the dragon… Your
feelings for Miss Lang, don’t let them cripple your common sense,
Son.

[They exchange looks, as Lionel walks past Lex to leave.]

Lionel: I suspect to see that stone by noon tomorrow. [turns,
pauses at door] It would be a shame if Genevieve’s corpse were
delivered to the sheriff with Lana Lang’s DNA as postage.

[Lex is left alone in the apartment; blue and red colors alternating
on his face.]

Lois: [to Clark] Then you and Lana are going to have a nice
little church wedding.

Lois: You know, I took this career test in some magazine. It
said my perfect job would be uh -– radio disc jockey.

Clark: Well that makes sense. You talk enough. There won’t be
any dead air.

Lois: You mock me now, Smallville. But you just wait and see.

Clark: Journalism. Ever thought about that? You wrote some
half-decent articles at your short-lived career at The Torch.

Lois: No, kill me first. Even if I could spell, the last
thing I’d want to do is spend my time in a newsroom. With my luck,
I’d probably end up sitting across the most bumbling reporter on the
masthead.

Martha: Oh my God, not again.

Chloe: Hey Clark, can you believe it? Twice in 16 years. I
mean this is crazy. Smallville must have some extraterrestrial
bull’s eye on it!

Clark: We don’t have much time, we need to find Lana.

Chloe: You’re right. And if anyone can find her with moments
to spare – it’s you, Clark.

Clark: [to Chloe] And I’m not normal?

Martha: Don’t think for a second this is your fault.

Clark: I came to Smallville in a meteor shower. Now it’s
happening again and it’s all because of me.

Jonathan: There is absolutely nothing you could’ve done to
prevent this.

Clark: We don’t know that. There’s got to be something I can
do.

Martha: Clark, you don’t have time.

Clark: I don’t have a choice.

Lex: [to Clark] I understand, some things simply can’t be
replaced.

Clark: Good luck, Lex.

Lex: Thanks, Clark. But I didn’t believe in luck. It’s our
wits and our fortitudes, Clark, that keep us safe -– and I’m sure
you have more than enough of both. Stay safe.

Jor-El: [to Clark] For the knowledge of the universe is meant
for you only, but you chose to deny your heritage. Today you will
witness the consequences.

Jor-El: [to Clark] The three must become one. It is the only
way to save Earth from total annihilation.

Jor-El: [to Clark] If you don’t unite them at once, you my
son will be seered by a fire from the sky, even you can’t survive.
The future of mankind rests in your hands, Kal-El.

Clark: [to Jor-El] Please, help me! I can’t do this alone!

Martha: No, you’re my son!!

Lana: [to Clark, giving him the element stone] Whatever it
is, whatever it means -– I somehow know it’s meant for you.

Lana: Clark, I need you to know that whatever happens, I will
never forget you.

Clark: Lana, you’re talking like we’re never going to see
each other again.

Lana: I love you.

[She kisses him, crying.]

Clark: I love you too.

Lana: [whispers] Goodbye.

[Sad and still crying, Lana leaves the barn, with Clark silently
watching her go.]

Jason: [to the Kents] I’m having what you’d call a rough day.

Lex: All right, agree to leave her alone and I’ll give you
something you desperately need.

Lionel: I’m a blessed man, Lex. I need very little in life.

Lex: I wonder: what good is a key if you don’t know where the
lock is.

Lex: Can you hear me, Dad. Before you leave this Earth, I
want you to know -– you did create the son you always wanted.

Lex: I’ll meet you in Metropolis.

Lana: What? You’re not coming?

Lex: I have a pressing matter I need to take care of. Now
Lana, for your own safety -– I need that stone.

[Lana looks back at him, does not answer.]

Lex: Look, we all have a need to cling on to things, but
eventually you have to loosen your grip. It’s too dangerous for you.

Lana: I don’t have it.

Lex: Lies don’t become you.

Lana: It’s the truth, Lex, I don’t have it… Trust me, it’s
safe -– I promise.

Lex: Where is it?!

[Lex snatches Lana’s purse and begins to look through it as Lana
watches; the helicopter still waiting to take her to the city.]

Lana: [upset] This was never about my safety, was it? This
was about you getting your hands on that stone.

[Lana’s words hit Lex and he realizes what he’s done. He turns back
to her, returning her purse, and holds her face in his hands.]

Lex: Lana, you mean more than of this… [brushes strands of
hair from her face] You mean a lot more to me than you know.

Lex: You know more than you’re telling me, Chloe. Who did
this?

Chloe: Lex, honestly, I just came to find Lana.

Lex: [pounding the vault frame, his back still to Chloe] Your
curiosity seems to always have a way of landing you in precious
positions –- [turns and holds Chloe firmly by the arms] only this
time you’re on a very narrow ledge with only one way back. Now who
took the element?!

Clark: Go. Go!

Man: [holding his son, after Clark has saved him from a
fireball] Thank you. [running for cover]. Thank you!

Chloe: Why do I get the feeling we’re not in this cave for
cover?

Lex: You know as well as I do -– it’s the epicenter.

Chloe: Of what?!

Lex: Come on, Chloe! You’re the town purveyor of all things
unexplained. You know damn well about this cave and the stones.

Chloe: Lex, what’s wrong with you?

Lex: [steps closer to her, taking hold of her again by the
arms] If you didn’t break into my library, you know who did. Who are
you trying to protect?

Chloe: No one.

Lex: Is it Clark?
