After Jodi (guest star Emily Holmes), the wife of a Special Forces soldier, sets off a pipe bomb in one of Lex’s (Michael Rosenbaum) secret labs, Lionel (John Glover) is severely injured and Lex is taken hostage by the enraged spouse. Claiming Lex kidnapped her missing husband, Jodi threatens to blow up the entire lab with Lex inside unless he tells her where her husband is. Clark sets off to rescue Lex, but is immediately felled by the kryptonite lining the earthen walls. Lex and Clark realize the only way they will make it out alive is by helping each other

Chloe: Well don’t look to me for encouragement. After what (Lex) did to my mom, I don’t mind the idea of him cohabitating with the rats for all eternity
Clark: Trust me, Chloe. Lately, I’ve had moments where I thought the world would be a better place without him, but…
Chloe: You don’t get to choose who you save… not if you’re Clark Kent
Lana: (to Lionel) I understand you’re in a lot of pain. (pause) Good.
Lionel: I see you’ve embraced whole-heartedly what it means to be a Luthor.
Lex: Did you really think I would let you die down here alone?
Clark gives him a look.
Lex: Then you didn’t know me at all.
Lex: You’re the only read friend I ever had Clark, but somewhere along the way you saw me as your nemesis.
Clark: Were we ever really friends, Lex?
