Review “Odyssey”
By: Celia
Its being four weeks since Clark and Lex’s confrontation in the fortress of ‘enter-without-knockingtude’, which disappeared in the thin air as its iconic guests. But none of them has been forgotten, since back at home there are people looking for them.
Clark’s people are headed by Oliver Queen, whom team is Black Canary (his future wife), Aquaman, and (in the always beautiful and sunny Offsreenville) Cyborg and Impulse. After searching all around the globe, facing some Luthorcorp employees and telling a few Russian’s words… Ollie manages to rescue and unpowered but healthy Clark. However our beloved alien won’t remain much more time like that due to Luthorcorp’s plan of using the proto justice league to find the traveler. Luckily Martian Manhunter comes to the rescue and saves his life and gets him his powers back flying Clark close to the sun. But since the sunlight has the opposite effect in our Martian friend (explaining his fear to fire) he loses his own powers.
On the other side of the ring we found Tess Mercer, new Luthorcorp’s leader whom is determinate to find her bald boss at any cost. One of her arsenal’s weapons is better known as Chloe Sullivan whom new power is being used by Luthorcorp while she is locked down in a jail she believes belongs to the government. It’s easy to believe that Chloe didn’t realized that she was in Luthorcorp’s hands since she know she is guilty of the charges she is being accused (she did it to help Clark but she still did those things), and the government would be more than willing to make test in people like her, after all it’s every freak’s biggest fear for a reason. The blonde hacker got her new and mysterious powers in the last episode “Arctic”, when Braniac tried to kill her, and she became a human computer more advanced than any known computer all over the world. She is being used against the proto justice league members without being aware of that. But don’t be afraid devoted fans, cause Chloe is not on her own and the rescue is coming! You didn’t think that Lois would let anyone to hurt her baby cousin, did you?
Undercover as a French maid Lois breaks into the Luthor’s manor to get information about Black Creek (the place where Chloe is) and there she meets Tess Mercer for the first time. They shared a scene where the both of them tried to show that they were powerful women that weren’t afraid of the other. I think we should announce Lois as the winner of the first round since she stole the information in Tess’s face. But let’s not say that Tess didn’t manage to get anything in this episode, since she learnt that someone was with Lex in the arctic and found the crystal that created the Fortress back in “Arrival”.
Lois goes to Black Creek where she finds Clark and fights with Luthorcorp’s security men. When she finally finds her cousin she is tazed by one of Tess’s doctors, whom Clark knocks out, and stays lying out in the floor for the rest of the scene meanwhile Clark and Chloe chat about Clark being human (what’s wrong with this show calling “unpowered Clark” a human?, he still born in another planet, didn’t he? Besides, a bird is still a bird when its wings are broken).
Once Chloe is safe at home Jimmy gets into the Talon and the both of them start a conversation about what they said the last time they were there. Jimmy wants to take the proposal of the table, but to his surprise Chloe says that she wants to marry him because during those four weeks she realized about she was missing for refusing to let her past go. They suck each other’s faces while the audience wonders what part of that was love and what part was just Chloe’s fear of ending alone.
Far away from the Talon, in The Daily Planet, Lois is trying to focus in what she is writing but an annoying creak doesn’t let her to. When she gets her head up she finds that Clark is the source of the noise and they start to talk about Clark’s near future, he is going to be working as a reporter in the Daily Planet just in front of Lois’s desk. Lois is shocked, but happy with the news. I loved this scene because it was about time of watching Clark getting closer to his destiny as star reporter of The Daily Planet. Being a reporter is an important trait of the iconic Clark I’ve loved since I was a little girl and I’m thrilled with this arc since I had no hope of this happening in Smallville while Al and Miles was on charge.
“Odyssey” is the beginning of a new season where Clark will face Doomsday, the most dangerous of his enemies, the only one that has been able of killing the man of steel. But in order of becoming an actual menace this show had to eliminate some things. On one hand we have Chloe’s healing power; we can’t take Doomsday as a serious threat if there’s a character in the show able of curing people. That’s why we had that scene where Chloe tried to cure Clark but wasn’t able of doing so. Besides we learnt that Clark wouldn’t like to be saved like that, since he asked Chloe not to do it. He doesn’t want to risk her friend’s life in order of saving his own. On the other hand Martian Manhunter saves his life but lost his own powers in the process so when the day of a smack down between Clark and Doomsday arrives we won’t be able of playing the Martian’s card to be saved.
In addition to Doomsday, Cassidy Freeman arrives to the show to play Tess Mercer’s character, her duty is being Lex’s Luthor replacement and, until now, she is doing an amazing job. Ollie joins the cast as a regular actor this time and he is more than welcome since we all love the Green Arrow (always he doesn’t steal Clark’s place as the star of the show of course). Clark needs more male friends and we hope to see much more about his friendships with Ollie, and mainly, his future best pal, cute Jimmy Olsen (beautifully played by the talented Aaron Ashmore). But the star of this episode was with no doubt Clark Kent, I loved the way he behaved, all brave and proactive. Besides I cheered with his last scene with “Cookieman”, where he was all proactive and willing to embrace his destiny (maybe because of feeling helpless for a whole month). Besides I loved how Martian Manhunter talked about Jor El and his desires of Clark having the power of a God but living among humans (not being a dictator o using humanity to his own goals).
For all this I give this episode 3.5 points, because it was a good episode but I hope the following episodes will be even better and wouldn’t be fair to give them all a 5.
