9.07 Kandor Review
By: Carlos
While Clark investigates the Kryptonians shields with Oliver, he discovers that his father Jor El is on Earth. Jor El comes to Smallville and is captured by Zod who believes he is the Blur. Jor El following Tess advice makes Zod believe that he is indeed Metropolis Hero to protect Clark’s identity.
During this event we discover that the Kandorians are clones created twenty years before the destruction of Krypton to guarantee their survival because of a civil war on the planet, but Jor El is disagreement by the use they gave to his science and seeing it as a danger to humans, contaminated the ORB which had the DNA of clones with blue Kryptonite and this is the cause of these having no powers whatsoever under the yellow sun.
In spite of Jor El’s sacrifice, during Zod’s torture, besides to find out that he was responsible for the end of Krypton Zod discovers the existence of Clark and that he is the Blur and he frees Jor El, but when Clark does find out his father finds him badly hurt and he dies in his arms, and during Jor El’s burial, Zod sees Clark from afar and sees as Clark uses his powers
REVIEW
One of the best episodes of season where give explanation to the featured Kandorianos source and many winks to the origin of superman (krypton) and to the mythical Donner film starring Christopher Reeve
Clark: even though he does not appear much in episode, this tour entirely around him, not only by his origins with the history of Krypton and the Kandorianos but as the center of all actions of the characters involved in the episode, is the obsession that Zod expressed by his alter-ego the blur and object of protection of Tess and Jor El the to the point of both tricking Zod with the identity of the line
One of the best episodes of the season where they give explanation about the Kandorianos and with many winks to the origin of Superman (Krypton) and especially to the mythical Donner film starring Christopher Reeve
And these people ARE THE EPISODES I LOVE, those on which even when Clark is not as much on screen all the story revolves AROUND him and the action revolves around here and not HIS and he revolving around other’s characters stories, and that’s what they should do always is a show about Superman.
Going back to Clark, I liked his fears before his meeting with Jor El, first his distrust to think that the real Jor El might be similar to FOS, at then their fear of not know how to relate to him used for years to interact with an artificial voice, then feeling empty after his death, I loved it.
Jor El: Despite the initial fear we all had about the casting of Jor El, not only Julian Sands was outstanding on the role of Jor EL it also at the end you understand that the Jor El, the one on Season 3, Relic was before Pa Kent born and before all the events of Krypton and all the Kandorian stuff, and in meantime 20 before Clark was born and the explosion and that’s why we see a 40-something Jor El and not again a Welling Jor El.
As I said the actor played the role really well and I liked this facet of father that is willing to sacrifice himself for his son since he learned about his existence and how during his torture is in his nature of pragmatic and visionary man and tries to convince Zod to take this as an opportunity to avoid the fate they have on Krypton and start a new life on earth (certainly the scene that I liked the most)
Zod: Is also explained and in a logical way that Zod is a major and not general nor as evil as he was in the next 20 years until Krypton was destroyed, but that is in process of becoming in it, incidentally great callback to Savior where soldiers when they judge and make the trail to Zod say that the latest thing they remember was being taking blood before the battle (when took them samples to the ORB),
This said, I loved Zod in this episode, we see the reasons why Zod becomes this evil being, and the beginning of his animosity with Jor El the (which is just the last thing they both remember), we can see that Zod had wife and son (prior to Faora and Davis) who died during the war, and that gradually was the beginning of the birth of this tyrant that we all are familiar with and we see it on this episode
Tess: the best of the episode, her interactions with Zod I love how they used each other and play to see who is more powerful, I love when after that game of seduction with his glass of wine, is the distraction Zod needs for his men to come and take Jor El away of her custody, unbeknownst to him that she put a track on Jor El also. Funny moment when she has a “fan girl” moment when Clark is his anger shows his powers to here, not even caring she is being hurt by them. Sexy Tessy always sublime.
Lois y Oliver: work with me for a moment here, I know what I am saying, I know Lois is not on the episode, but I like the continuity and her mentions about what happened on the previous episode (and the fact she was actually mentioned when she is not there, thing that was common on the past) I liked the awkwardness between Clark and Oliver about Lois, but without the drama within and how Oliver was there for Clark at the end as I said on the Crossfire review that’s the Oliver that I like, a complement for the drama and the action.
Chloe: Her intervention, is a controversial one cause you can feel how the facts are being tergiversated, justifying her spaying of the farm with the excuse “you weren’t there” despite the fact Clark was back home weeks ago and then justifies it as something good cause she could record Jor El without telling this to the person whose this information will matter the most…Clark and yes I am losing my faith on Chloe and the means she is taking this year, if they continue they are going to manage that many of us start to really dislike Chloe
FINISHING
Without a doubt an excellent episode, most people seemed to like it because it was a nod to the Donner movies, however for me, that’s not the reason, a good episode is not a good episode only because it honors the movies,, is because the story is about Clark Kent. The Verdict:
5/5
